Google Keyword Planner Tool

Google Keyword Planner Tool has been a fundamental pillar for the creation of SEO campaigns during the last years.
Google Keyword Planner Tool

One of its great advantages is that it was free and public access, it was enough to have a Gmail account and you could analyze a very good amount of relevant keywords.
However, since August 28, 2013, the Google keyword tool has had some changes, starting with its name. Now it's called Keyword Planner.
As reported by Google on its official website, with this important change seek "combine the functionality of the keyword tool with the Traffic Estimator, in order to make it easier to plan search campaigns."

Before looking at the new features that Google's new keyword tool offers the "Keyword Planner" and how to use it properly, we will see a major change within the new user interface.
When you enter with the intention of researching your keywords in the planner, you will have two tabs at your disposal. The first is called Ad group ideas and is selected by default.
In this section, you will find keywords grouped by categories or ad groups. This option is more focused on those people who are going to use the tool to create their campaigns in Google AdWords.
However, if your intentions are to take advantage of the tool to create SEO campaigns, you must select the Ideas tab for keywords, which is just to the right of the previous one.

You will need a Google AdWords account

In order to carry out your research it is necessary that you have a Google AdWords account, although this procedure has no cost, you will need to add a credit card.
Yes, I know. Google every day gets more demanding but is part of the changes.
Once you sign in with your Google account, make sure you're in the Keyword Planner section. If you do not know how to do it, it's very simple.
You are located on the top menu and go to Tools and Analysis >> Keyword PlannerWhile there, click on Search for keywords and ad group ideas.

From that moment you can research keyword ideas based on different criteria such as: a product or service, landing page, product category.
When you have defined your search criteria for research, you must click on the Get ideas button.
Just load the results you will notice that they will be divided between the two tabs mentioned above. Remember that for keyword research purposes for SEO, you must locate yourself in the Keyword Ideas tab.

Analyzing the results

When you reach this point you will notice that the monthly and local-global searches that appeared in the previous keyword tool are no longer available separately, they have now been unified in the Average monthly searches column.
To make more precise searches you should only locate in the upper left part of your monitor in the Segmentation section. Here you can make changes and "refine" your searches a little more, defining aspects such as:
  • The country where you want to focus your research
  • Language
  • The origin of your results (Only Google or also associated sites)
  • Negative keywords
After the Segmentation box, you will find the option to Customize the search. This will help you guide your research a lot more, because you can filter by average monthly searches, suggested bid and percentage of ad impressions.
In the same way, you can also include or exclude the keywords you want.

Keyword match types

One of the most important functions of the old keyword tool was to be able to filter the results by match types. Wide, exact and phrase.
Now it is not necessary to define this filter since the results obtained by default come with the "exact" match type.

Historical statistics

In addition to the average monthly searches for each keyword, you can also see a history of the behavior of that word in the last twelve months in the Google search results.
This aspect is very important because it allows you to analyze how much people are looking for these terms and from there to define whether it is worth it or not to bet on it.
In the suggested bid column you will find the average or tentative price established by Google for each keyword or phrase.
This option is useful for people who want to create ads within the Google AdWords program.

Download your keyword list

As always, Google seeks to make life easier for us, so if you want to save the keywords you have researched, you can do it with a few simple clicks. To execute this step, you only have to go to the Download tab and define the criteria of the file that you are going to download.

Google Keyword Planner Tool

The new Keyword Planner has not been seen very well by a lot of SEO professionals because they were already adapted to the old tool.
However, we must get used to Google constantly making changes to improve and I think this case is no exception.
If we analyze this tool a little more thoroughly, we can deduce that it has more aspects in favor than against, since it allows for more refined investigations, in the same way, it organizes the words much better and provides relevant information on each keyword.
It's just a matter of adapting to change and trying to make the most of it in our digital marketing strategy.
What do you think of the new Google Keyword Planner? Have you adapted easily to the new design? Leave us your comments, they will be of great help to all.
